Using the Right Tools

There are two tools I recommend to all writers, especially those starting out:

  1. A spelling and grammar checker that checks your writing in real time, like Grammarly.

  2. A generative AI like ChatGPT.

There are other tools available that I know other writers are fond of, but for me, these cover everything you need for general writing.

Spelling/grammar checkers

Spelling/grammar checkers are great to have running at all times so you can correct your mistakes and make improvements as you write. The free version of Grammarly is pretty good for that, and the paid version is even better. (Ask your employer to pay for it if you have one.) The more experienced you are the less you rely on this kind of thing but it's always handy.

AI

Generative AI is replacing writers for basic writing tasks, but it's also one of the best tools to help writers.

I never use it to write anything from scratch, though you can use it that way for ideas and inspiration. I find it more helpful for checking or modifying something already written.

For example:

  • Make this more succinct.

  • Rewrite this in a more positive tone.

  • Change passive to active voice.

Again, the better you get at writing the less you need to use this kind of thing, but it's always going to be handy.

Some warnings about AI
  • Don't use it as a crutch. If you rely on it too much your writing will suffer.

  • Always check the output thoroughly because AI is highly unreliable and lies and hallucinates with great authority.

If you find yourself spending more time finessing the prompt and fixing mistakes than it would have taken to just write the thing yourself, you've become way too reliant.
